Tivoli prides itself on the sound quality of its products and the new Model One Digital is as satisfying to listen to as both the original as well as the analog Model One. Which is to say, you get a rich, warm sound signature and plenty of volume. In fact, the MOD gets impressively loud if you want it to, and does so without any distortion.
But the acoustic tuning tends to favor lows, and highs and can leave the midranges feeling a tad muddy at times. Because of this, I wish Tivoli had included some way to tweak the MOD's EQ, but alas, it didn't.
As with the original MOD, the best sound quality is via one of the two Wi-Fi options. Bluetooth doesn't sound bad at all, but there's an extra layer of depth when you use Wi-Fi, especially when streaming from a service like Tidal, which gives you lossless audio options.
Now with a remote control

Another big improvement to the 2nd generation MOD is the inclusion of a full-featured remote control. The slender remote has buttons for every function, including easy access to the six assignable radio presets. Because there's no longer a dedicated app, all settings changes are done on the MOD itself, and the remote lets you access them via the settings cog button.
If you're thinking of using the MOD as a bedroom speaker, the remote is a must-have, letting you place the speaker anywhere, while you control it from your bed (or anywhere there's line-of-site to the MOD).
Pro tip: The instructions don't tell you this, but the four-way directional buttons can be used to play/pause, and track skip forward/back when using Bluetooth, AirPlay, or Chromecast.

It really is impossible to tell the two versions of the Model One Digital apart just by looking at them. The high-grade wood surround, the fabric-covered speaker, the combo power-source-volume knob, and the tactile aluminum “MOD ring” that lets you access the speaker's functions — they've all returned.
Somewhat sadly, so has the small, square color display that sits in the middle of the MOD ring. In 2018, I said I wished it occupied the full space within the ring, and I still feel that way today.
Around the back, you'll find the 3.5mm auxiliary input for analog audio sources, a Micro USB port for factory servicing, a set-up button, and a mute button. The presence of the mute button on the back panel seems like an odd choice — it's not easy to locate with just your fingers, and yet it's something you'll probably want to use fairly often.
My guess is that Tivoli didn't want to change the layout of the back panel from the original Model One Digital, so it replaced the Party Mode button (which you could use to share listening sessions to other Tivoli wireless speakers, but it never worked reliably) with the mute button.
Overall though, the second-gen is just as attractive to look at as its predecessors — important when you're spending this kind of dough.
Design
The Model One Digital ($129.99 at Amazon Canada) is a reimagining of the Tivoli Model One, which is basically an AM/FM radio with aux inputs. Offered in black, white/gray, and walnut gray and measuring 4.5 by 8.7 by 5.5 inches (HWD), the Model One Digital reimagines the original's dial as a multifunctional bezel around a circular display. The bezel can be turned (to scan radio stations) or pressed in; it's touch sensitive. There's also a volume knob that doubles as a power button and sound source selector. The layout certainly looks sharp, but in practice, the dial seems too close to the bezel—your thumb can easily get caught between the knob and the bezel.
Out of the box, the display is quite dim. When I adjusted the contrast, the reason why became clear: Increasing the brightness of the text and graphics to a more comfortable setting also brightens the background, which reveals the seemingly round display is actually a rectangle. This also explains why the fonts and graphics look tiny—they are actually occupying as much display real estate as possible, it's the display that's tiny. In an era of high-res touch screens, the Model One Digital's display looks more like what you got on an early iPod.
The back panel houses a 3.5mm aux input, a micro USB service port, a setup button, and a Party Mode button (for assigning the same audio to all speakers that are wirelessly connected, rather than having some play only the left or right channel). There are also connections for the included 15-volt power supply and FM antenna.
Similar Products
The Model One Digital foregoes AM radio (but there's still FM, and DAB, where it's available). Where the original can connect via cable to a second speaker (the Model Two, which looks like a Model One without a dial), the Model One Digital can connect wirelessly to the speakers in the Tivoli ART speaker lineup. This group of speakers includes the Model One Digital, the Tivoli Audio ART Speaker ($129.99 at Amazon Canada) (a.k.a. the Orb), and the Cube. The Cube is almost the same speaker as the Model One Digital, minus the dial and screen (it also has a slightly smaller enclosure, but uses the same driver). You can assign speakers to be left or right channels, or to all stream in the aforementioned Party Mode. Regardless of whether you stream via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the Model One Digital will stream to the other speakers using its own wireless network. On its own, the Model One Digital is a mono speaker.
Powering up the speaker is a slower-than-usual process; you press the power/volume knob and hold it down, then wait for the system to completely boot, which can take more than 10 seconds (when the speaker's not in use, the display becomes a clock.) For listening modes, the Model One Digital uses the same knob to switch between Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, aux, and FM radio. In radio mode, the bezel acts as a tuning dial—pressing it in allows you to assign presets, double-pressing allows you to scan. The dial makes for ideal adjustments to the FM signal, with a digital readout of the the exact frequency you're tuned to.
In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes, the bezel becomes a play/pause button at the top and bottom, and a track navigation button on the sides—left navigates back, right side skips to the next track. It can, at first, seem like the playback and navigation buttons aren't working, because there is often a considerable delay between tapping them and getting a result. When adjusting the volume on your phone, there's also a considerable delay, which oddly isn't the case if you use the dial on the speaker.
Using the Tivoli ART app, the setup process for streaming via Wi-Fi is a little involved. First, you connect to the speaker's own network, and then you connect to your home Wi-Fi network. You also have to tap the Setup button on the speaker's rear panel. We were able to successfully connect to the network on our first try, but were unable to get music playing via the app initially. However, rebooting the speaker seemed to do the trick. Your own phone's music menu is probably more graceful than the Tivoli app's. Other than assigning left/right channels to multi-speaker arrays or playing music from streaming services like Spotify (you can also use the Spotify app, since the speaker is compatible with Spotify Connect) or Deezer, the app doesn't really accomplish anything that you can't take care of in the usual ways, using your preferred apps.
Speaking of setup, the speaker doesn't automatically re-pair with your phone. Stepping out to lunch with your phone? When you return, you have to manually pair it again. There are $40 speakers that avoid this issue.
Conclusions
Tivoli Audio's struggle to adapt to the digital realm of streaming audio feels like it has been the company's primary hurdle for some time now. Ostensibly, the ART speaker lineup, of which the Model One Digital is part, is supposed to be the company's big step forward into the digital realm, ushering familiar-looking iconic designs into the streaming era. But being a solid wireless speaker means more than having partnerships with Spotify.
The display, and much of the functionality here, feels dated. If you're in love with the Tivoli aesthetic, we don't blame you—the Model One Digital is quite attractive. And if you only listen to classical and jazz, you may very well love the sound you get. But for $300 or less, you can get wireless audio—even stereo—in a good-looking, well-designed speaker that doesn't distort, like the Marshall Kilburn ($129.99 at Amazon Canada) and the more affordable Bose SoundLink Mini II ($129.99 at Amazon Canada) . For more money, (close to what a Model One Digital and a Cube would cost as a stereo pair), the Bang & Olufsen Beolit 15 ($129.99 at Amazon Canada) is a gracefully designed speaker with far stronger audio performance.
The Bottom Line
The Tivoli Audio Model One Digital updates the iconic design of its predecessor—adding Bluetooth and Wi-Fi audio playback—but not without some hitches.

Tivoli's biggest mistake with the original MOD was in thinking it could deliver a Sonos-style multi-device, multi-source, and multiroom experience. The Tivoli Audio ART app that it used to do this was messy, hard to navigate, and lacked support for a variety of popular streaming music services.
This was made worse by the fact that unless you were a Spotify listener, there was no other way to stream to the MOD over Wi-Fi. Bluetooth was way easier to use, but came at the cost of sound quality.
The new MOD eliminates the ART app. Instead, Tivoli has outsourced the MOD's Wi-Fi streaming capabilities to Apple (via AirPlay 2 support) and Google (via Chromecast support). The result may not be as fully-featured as a Sonos speaker, but it works and it's reliable, and it's easy to use.
Setting the MOD gen 2 up as either an AirPlay or Chromecast speaker (or both!) is a cinch. For AirPlay, the MOD shows up in your iOS device's Wi-Fi list as an available AirPlay speaker. For Chromecast, you need to use the Google Home app. This takes a few extra minutes, but once the MOD has been added to your home, you'll be able to control its volume and group it with any other Chromecast speakers you may have.
Since virtually all music streaming apps support one or both of these Wi-Fi technologies, you send a huge variety of music to the MOD at the highest possible quality.

Автономность
Ещё один критически важный момент — автономное питание. Очевидно, что бумбокс должен иметь возможность работать либо от собственного аккумулятора, либо от сменных батареек. И чем больше время работы, тем лучше. Рассчитывать желательно на то, чтобы колонка от полного заряда проработала хотя бы 6 часов на умеренной громкости. Для мощных моделей при высокой громкости автономность неизбежно будет снижаться
Поэтому важно предусмотреть, чтобы была возможность заряжать бумбокс от пауэрбанка без выключения.
Влагозащита
Бумбоксы чаще всего используются на природе и на вечеринках, где бережное отношение не вполне возможно. Дизайн и оформление
Внешность бумбокса может казаться второстепенным моментом, но на самом деле эффектный дизайн колонки, да ещё с адаптивной подсветкой могут создать особую атмосферу праздника.
Performance
On jazz and classical recordings, the Model One Digital sounds wonderful—rich lows matched with solid clarity throughout the range. It's a warm sound, as analog and vinyl aficionados might say. But everything changes when you play modern mixes. Not always, but often enough, there's distortion in the lows and low-mids. Sometimes, it seems like what's happening isn't necessarily distortion, but vibration of the housing—regardless, it's the sound of a system that's overwhelmed by tracks that aren't traditionally challenging.
Bill Callahan's «Drover,» a track with very little deep bass in the mix, is not a track we use to test distortion. We typically play it see if the drums and his baritone vocals sound too bass-heavy, which is often the case on bass-forward systems. Through the Model One Digital, the drums sound full and natural at moderate volumes and Callahan's voice takes on a commanding low-mids presence, while the guitar strums have a clear high-mid delivery. Turn the speaker up to higher volumes, however, and you have issues. The drums and the vocals start to take on the fuzzy tone of bass distortion. It's not overwhelming on this track, but it's surprising that it exists at all.
So you can imagine the results on tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's «Silent Shout»? It's not this track's truly deep electronic bass drum hits (that kick in around 15 seconds) that make the Model One Digital distort, it's the hits that start off the track, which don't go nearly as deep into the sub-bass realm. When we hear these drum hits distort, the light distortion we heard on the Callahan track makes more sense—the Model One Digital has far more trouble with lows and low-mids than with sub-bass. It's as if it's boosting these rich frequencies too much, while the sub-bass realm is more or less left alone and not boosted much. The results are are subtle but clean sub-bass, but often murky lows and low-mids. At high volumes, the Model One Digital can't quite handle them if they are already prominent in the mix.
On orchestral tracks, like the opening scene in John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, you get beautiful richness (though certainly boosted to a degree), lending the lower register instrumentation more body. The Model One Digital has issues with the same frequency range in other genres, where the lower register content is often less subtle. Electric basses and drum sets can often cause trouble, whereas lower-range orchestral instruments are less likely to. So it's worth repeating that classical music really does sound wonderful through the Model One Digital. But a $300 price requires more versatility than that.

Импеданс — полное сопротивление, измеряется в омах. Если выбираете наушники для портативного устройства, то ориентируйтесь на модели с небольшим импедансом — от 18 до 45 Ом. Если подключить наушники с сопротивлением 100 Ом к смартфону, возможно, он с ними просто не справится — звук будет глухим и тихим, со множеством артефактов.
