Заканчивая про динамики, хотел еще немножко рассказать про твитер, и в том числе про его мембрану. Внешне вогнутый бериллиевый купол в разных версиях я видел неоднократно, все-таки для Focal это давняя фирменная технология и большая гордость. Тут же мне представилась возможность подержать в руках отдельно сам купол, который никогда не собирали в цельный твитер. Логично, что бериллиевый купол должен быть очень твердым, но хрупким. Ломать его я, конечно, не пробовал, но вот вес впечатляет. Если его просто отпустить с руки, то он не будет падать, он будет планировать и кувыркаться в воздухе, как листик или семечко растения — сопротивления воздуха достаточно для неспешного полета.

И еще один важный эксперимент, который с акустикой Sopra ранее мне не удалось проделать. Условно-несъемную защитную сетку с твитера все-таки можно снять. И хотя таких рекомендаций нигде нет, если открутить два винтика и снять защиту, то под ней обнаружится совершенно аккуратная поверхность и даже надписи «Beryllium» и «Hand made in France». Косвенно все это как бы намекает, что если в вашей комнате прослушивания получится обеспечить твитерам должную безопасность, то сеточки можно и открутить. Кстати, забегая вперед скажу, что результат слышен, не то чтобы слышен катастрофично, но разница есть и без сеточки звук чуть чище и прозрачнее.

Еще из нюансов — внутренняя проводка. Не знаю, каким кабелем она сделана, но мне попалась информация, что провода тоже французского происхождения. Ну а в характеристиках самой проводки существенно то, что для твитера и среднечастотника использовано сечение в 4 квадратных миллиметра, а для басовика — все восемь.

Еще раз сложив в уме все изменения, я сделал вывод, что инженеры, конструировавшие обновленную модель, проделали свою работу аккуратно и продуманно. На месте компания и ее разработчики точно не стоят, совершенствуя именно то, что нужно. Это не косметика ради нового индекса на корпусе, а тонкая и профессиональная доводка. Таковы общие первые впечатления от знакомства, дальше нужно слушать — бывает ведь и так, что внешне все здорово и логично, а звук вызывает вопросы. Но не буду заранее ни хвалить звук, ни пытаться его прогнозировать.

ORIGINAL FINISHES

All the loudspeakers in the line are now offered with new automotive-inspired, less conventional colors, with an ultra-sleek finish. Each speaker is available in Metallic Blue, Ash Grey and British Racing Green, as well as the timeless Black Lacquer and Carrara White.

The loudspeaker cabinet is fully lacquered, with the front and sides in one single color. Black makes a comeback in the details, with the baskets and tweeter cabinet in Graphite Black. All these finish choices assure a more harmonious and understated coherence overall, which highlights the originality of the new colors. Grande Utopia EM Evo will retail for $120,000, Stella Utopia EM Evo for $65,000, Maestro Utopia Evo for $32,500 and Scala Utopia Evo for $20,000. They will be available for purchase in September.

Focal Adds the Emblematic Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo Loudspeakers to its Utopia III Evo Line

Debuting at 2018 High-End Trade Fair in Munich, Focal's legacy Hi-Fi loudspeaker is redefined

Munich – May 10, 2018 – Focal, a recognized leader on the global stage for high fidelity products, today launches the most emblematic high-fidelity loudspeakers of all its Collections: Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo, at the 2018 High-End Trade Fair in Munich.

Redefining the Utopia III Evo unveiled in 2017, the newest models embody Focal's constant investment in research and development for true audio innovation. Built on a legacy of delivering the ultimate in acoustics, the Utopia III Evo line has always been unfailingly extraordinary.

FULSOME FUSILLADE

Tonally there's nothing at all wrong with the sound, but the magic is in short supply, while with a track with serious bass impact, such Diana Ross's ‘I'm Coming Out' from her Diana album , the sheer power the speakers can deliver threatens to overwhelm the singer.

Released in 1980, the album's production, by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, is hardly shy when it comes to the rhythm section, and against the fusillade of bass and percussion Ms Ross sounds a little lost back there behind the line of the speakers somewhere. Following a little more bass adjustment and she gets just that bit more of a fighting chance, but then that's at the expense of some of the Chic-powered drive of the track.

We asked Focal's Electro-Acoustic System Designer, Dr Raoul Bauer, to respond to our concerns about two aspects of the Grande Utopia's measured performance: its ‘busy' cumulative spectral decay waterfall and its tough impedance .

‘Waterfalls can reveal a lot of information about physical phenomena that are mainly related to resonances or diffraction. The Grande Utopia is based on a multi-box structure that can be manually adjusted to achieve perfect time alignment, but the boxes edges, especially around the midrange drivers and tweeter, can also influence waterfall tests. We feel that diffraction effects are less critical than resonances when it comes to listening.

‘The Grande Utopia is far from a standard speaker. Its size, weight, price and overall performance all prove there is nothing conventional on this model. This is that's why we call it Utopia! So, we made choices that we would probably not make with more conventional speakers.

C'EST LA VIE

Then, just when you think you've got their measure, these 2m-tall monoliths throw you a curveball – or maybe that's a Gallic shrug – with The Who's system-testing ‘Baba O'Riley' from Who's Next . Things start promisingly enough, but as the track builds the Utopia EM Evos make it sound, well, a little anaemic, with Keith Moon's usually cannoning drums a particular victim – hardly the anthemic album opener it has long been.

While I don't for a minute regret having spent time with the Grande Utopia EM Evo speakers, I just wish I'd found them a bit more special.

I wonder if the French have an expression for ‘a curate's egg'?

The sheer amount of technology that's been brought to bear on these gargantuan speakers is as undeniable as their physical presence is inescapable. However, though I doubt this conclusion will matter to those with the space, budget and hankering for these speakers, I must say that they demand long and careful auditioning, and I sincerely hope their buyers find the magic in them, and love them more.

REINFORCED ACOUSTIC STRUCTURE

The structure of the speaker boasts an increased rigidity thanks to the MRR (Machined Reinforcement Rings) system. This is composed of solid aluminum parts machined in the mass, positioned between the front speaker and the speaker driver basket. This sandwich technology is used in the form of rings for the 6″ and 11″ speaker drivers of the Stella Utopia EM Evo, and on the 6″ speaker drivers of the Grande Utopia EM Evo. The 13″ (Stella Utopia EM Evo) and 15″ woofers (Grande Utopia EM Evo) also use segments of solid aluminum. The rigidity of the front speaker is also considerably increased in the array area around the speaker drivers, while benefiting from the excellent dampening of the very thick MDF woofer.

HANDS ON

It's not the first time the Grande Utopias have graced these halls: in their earlier iteration they were reviewed by the late John Bamford in the same room. And I'd heard that previous version in various locations over the years, from a hotel suite when they were launched through to Focal's own rather excellent listening room in Saint Etienne. However, this was the first time I was to get truly ‘hands on' with the Grand Utopia EM Evo speakers, connected into a known system and in a room with which I was familiar – so expectations were high.

A word about that ‘hands on' thing… Given their sheer scale and mass, this isn't a speaker you'd want to install and set up without a crew. There's another reason, too: if you've already formed an impression of complexity just from the pictures on these pages, you ain't seen the half of it.

With some pride. Focal mentions the degree to which the speakers can be customized to suit the listening space. Its 'Focus Time Adjustment' covers 1458 possible mechanical and electronic permutations. These include a series of links on the cabinet rear enabling the crossover characteristics to be altered.

Bass tuning for that sub-80 Hz woofer is also offered via a level control on the offboard PSUs that serve that big electromagnetic (EM) driver at the bottom of each ‘stack'.

Mechanical adjustment involves retrieving the supplied 'starting handle', inserting it into a hole in the rear of the tweeter cabinet – the speaker is in five sections – and cranking. As you wind, the mechanics within curl, or uncurl, the top of the speaker toward the listening position, enhancing that 'emblematic' shape. A numerical readout on the cabinet rear makes the setting repeatable. Meanwhile the electrical links allow you to modify the crossover slopes and relative levels of the

LAB REPORT – FOCAL GRANDE UTOPIA EM EVO

Focal claims 94 dB sensitivity for the Utopia EM Evo which loudspeakers we have measured. But our pink noise figure of exactly 91 dB is well short of that. This was obtained by measuring at 2m distance (not our usual 1m). the cabinet ‘curl' maximised and adding 6dB to compensate. A further measurement at 1m affirmed this compensation and also that the responses at 1m and 2m were little different. Although 91dB is not 94dB. it's still a high sensitivity which, despite the Utopia's imposing dimensions, has required the use of low impedance.

3 ohm minimum, and we measured a low of 1.9ohm. LF phase drops the EPDR to a minimum of 1.1 ohm at 187Hz, with further outstanding at ±1.3dB. Using the jumpers , treble output can be reduced by about 2dB or boosted by about 0.8dB and midrange can be cut or boosted by about 1dB. Diffraction-

THE LEGEND IS EVOLVING

Since its launch in 2008, the award-winning Utopia III has been constantly evolving, as Focal's acoustic engineers are always refining their research to expand the limits of sound. Known for using unique materials, Focal's innovation is not only clear in the speaker drivers, but also the crossover, the structure of the loudspeaker and variety of finishes available. Every detail has been developed to further push the limits of acoustic delicacy and transparency.

Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo now integrate all the research conducted since Utopia III was launched in 2008. They showcase the brand's exclusive technologies, particularly in the midrange: the TMD (Tuned Mass Damping) suspension and the NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit). The structure of the loudspeaker itself has also been strengthened by the new MRR (Machined Reinforcement Rings) system around the speaker drivers. More intimately, the crossover has been redesigned, the components modified and meticulously selected for a more accurate sound quality.

Like the first models in this line (Maestro Utopia Evo and Scala Utopia Evo), Grande Utopia EM Evo and Stella Utopia EM Evo are available in new finishes inspired by the automotive world, like Metallic Blue, Ash Grey and British Racing Green. От Sopra же пришлась к месту алюминиевая условно-несъемная защитная сетка для 27-миллиметрового вогнутого бериллиевого твитера. 27-сантиметровый басовик вроде бы оставили без изменений.

Еще, при внешнем осмотре можно увидеть, что акустика получила совершенно новую коммутационную панель, позволяющую использовать би-ампинг или би-вайринг. Здесь теперь не одна, а две пары отличных акустических клемм WBT, в базовом варианте замкнутых родными перемычками.

Идеология и реализация подстроечных перемычек, позволяющих настраивать отдачу по басу и по верхним частотам, осталась прежней — по три значения на каждую регулировку и родные массивные подпружиненные перемычки. Регулировки без фанатизма — и там и там только плюс-минус 1 дБ. На этом фоне немножко изменились параметры работы кроссовера. Совсем немного, но у техники такого класса мелочей быть не должно.

Но на самом деле сетку можно и снять, если условия использования позволяют

Диффузоры изготовлены с использованием известной, прекрасно себя зарекомендовавшей фирменной трехслойной конструкции из вспененной основы и двух слоев стекловолокна, — это так называемые W-диффузоры. Внутри «силовые цветочки» (Power Flower) тоже остались — это наборные конструкции, составленные из нескольких круглых и расположенных по кругу магнитов-«лепестков». А к среднечастотнику еще и прибавилась система-технология NIC (Neutral Inductance Circuit), использующая кольцо Фарадея, добавленное к конструкции магнита динамика. Применено это для стабилизации характеристик динамика при любом положении катушки в зазоре. Как результат — меньше искажений, чище и разборчивее звучание.

MADE IN FRANCE

As usual Focal goes its own way, with everything designed and manufactured in-house. So what has been Evo'd here? Well, the mid drivers have gained Tuned Mass Dampers , and the addition of Focal's Neutral Inductance Circuit – a Faraday ring in the motor circuit of the two 16.5cm sandwich-coned ‘W' drivers. This normalises the field strength, inductance and reduces distortion of the magnet assembly regardless of voice coil position.

In addition the driver mounting is strengthened with the use of milled-from-solid ‘Reinforcement Rings' between the woodwork and the driver chassis. These stiffen the assembly and spread the load of the attachment. Full rings are used on the two 16.5cm drivers, with ring 'segments' for the 40cm unit.

These changes have enabled the crossover to be revised as part of the development process, improving the phase response between bass and midrange drivers. Otherwise the Utopia still uses those five drivers, an inverted beryllium dome tweeter, with ‘Infinite Acoustic Loading', and a 27cm ‘W'-coned midbass unit making up the complement. Each is mounted in its own 'Gamma Structure' enclosure, made from MDF up to 5cm thick and featuring a proprietary internal damping material.

The speaker is delivered in two pieces, with the topmost box, for the 27cm midbass driver, mounted onto the rest of the assembly via two locating pins that also serve to make the electrical connection across the divide. As before, reflex loading of that massive woofer is achieved with a downward-venting laminar flow port, with the speaker tilted back on a substantial base that also houses bi-wire terminals and the input for the sub-bass unit's PSU.

Completing the look is the 'Graphite Black' finish of the tweeter module, feet and the speaker chassis, which are revealed when you remove the individual grilles for each driver. Incidentally, the perforated metal grille that protects the beryllium tweeter is now a permanent fixture on the Utopia EM Evo.

LOOMING THUNDER

All the same, nothing quite prepares you for the sheer visual impact of a pair of Grande Utopia EM Evo speakers, even in editor PM's relatively large listening room where we conducted both lab and listening tests. I'd experienced the same speakers a few weeks previously at a show, where they looked big in a cavernous hotel conference room: here, in Ash Grey and virtually filling the space from floor to ceiling, they were

positively lowering in their storm-toned colour way. ‘Presence' doesn't cover it: these speakers look just plain intimidating.

По внешности и исполнению не могу придраться ни к одному винтику. Очень цельная акустика с отличными музыкальными способностями. Притом не экзотика-эзотерика, без вычурного характера или странных заморочек. К тому же это результат работы крупного производителя, самостоятельно выпускающего и корпуса, и динамики на французских производственных мощностях, собирающего все с должным уровнем контроля качества.

Также очень приятно, что Фокал эволюционирует, разработчики доводят модели с ювелирной точностью, но при этом стиль и характер звучания сохраняются. Что касается этой, третьей по счету в истории Scala Utopia, то никаких следов недочетов первой версии, конечно же, нет (они ушли еще в предыдущей реинкарнации), а звук стал еще точнее и чище. Пожалуй, я не могу себе представить, что еще здесь можно улучшить и куда этой акустике дальше эволюционировать.

Очевидно, что владельца Focal Scala Utopia III Evo (если он, конечно, не купит ее за красивый вид и потому как попросту может за нее заплатить) ждет непростая задача — подбор компонентов системы. Играть будет каждый нюанс, все будет слышно. Поэтому на изначальный подбор компонентов и на последующую доводку стоит обратить максимум внимания. Но если так подойти к делу — можно выстроить желаемый, до мелочей свой(!) звук. Жанровости именно от акустики я в процессе теста не услышал, только особенности того, как отыграла система в целом (как раз систему-то хотелось бы повзрослее). Вообще, на основе Focal Scala Utopia III Evo можно выстроить систему под самые сложные записи и жанры. А ведь это только «младшая» модель из всех «Утопий»… Впрочем, движение по модельному ряду вверх во многом будет оправданно при наличии подходящего помещения и желания масштабировать звук с должным качеством.
