Yamaha HS8 is yet another model from Yamaha that will appeal to many producers and music lovers — especially the audio fans of the previous NS10.

In fact, it’s an excellent modern alternative to the discontinued speaker.

The speaker is suitable for different kinds of environments, but it’s IDEAL for middle to large room studios. The HS8 tends to be more practical for bass-heavy sounds as opposed to hip-hop. So if you’re looking for a quality speaker for bass-laden music, HS8 could do the trick.

Design

The HS8 sports a timeless design, and it’s available in black and white color options. The speaker is on the larger side, but not massive to hijack the space in the room.

The HS8 studio monitor is 14 x 16 x 21 inches. Additionally, the HS8 weighs 22 pounds.

Sound Quality

This speaker features an 8-inch cone woofer that gives minimal distortion. The HS8 provides a well-defined sound on bottom-end output. There’s also a 1-inch dome tweeter. The tweeter is efficient in providing clarity and crispness with high-end sound output.

С одной стороны, это мультимедийное колонки, предназначенные для подключения к ПК, традиционно не пользующиеся уважением настоящих меломанов. А, с другой стороны, под это же определение попадает мониторная студийная акустики, к качеству звучания которой нет никаких претензий.

На самом деле, качественный уровень «компьютерной» акустики в последнее время существенно вырос, и в этом сегменте работают серьезные Hi-Fi-компании. Приличные корпуса из MDF, качественные динамики, мощные встроенные усилители – по этим показателям хорошая мультимедийная акустика часто почти неотличима от студийной. Различия, как обычно, кроются в деталях.

Активные колонки Yamaha HS 50 M относятся ко второму типу колонок – это настоящие компактные «мониторы», которые, впрочем, можно подключить и к компьютеру. Колонки оснащены ВЧ-динамиком с тканевой купольной диафрагмой диаметром 19 мм, и 110-мм басовиком с полимерным диффузором, выкрашенным в белый цвет. Диффузор закреплен на качественном резиновом подвесе, имеющем довольно тугой рабочий ход.
Для дополнительного усиления басов HS 50 M оснащены фазоинвертором, выходное отверстие которого вынесено на заднюю панель, и ориентировано точно на магнит пищалки. Внутри корпус колонки заглушен специальным звукопоглощающим материалом, и на контрольное простукивание его стенки почти не «отзываются».

На задней панели АС довольно много органов управления. Помимо регулятора уровня сигнала, здесь предусмотрено три переключателя формы АЧХ в области средних (Mid EQ), высоких (High Trim) и низких (Room Correction) частот. Если колонки будут включены совместно с сабвуфером, то суммарное звучание такой системы можно настроить с помощью переключателя Low Cut (изменение частоты среза входного фильтра между значениями 80 и 100 Гц).

Вход продублирован балансным разъемом XLR и 6,3-мм «джеком» — вполне профессиональное решение, хотя традиционный RCA бы тоже не помешал. Сетевой кабель здесь съемный, что также является «приметой» колонок для студийного использования, так как зачастую они размещаются довольно далеко от сетевых розеток, и для их подключения может потребоваться провод нестандартной длины.

Внешне колонки выглядят очень солидно, и скупая проста их дизайна вполне компенсируется качеством исполнения, которое угадывается в аккуратно скругленных углах как будто литого корпуса, надежности затяжки всех креплений и четкой работе переключателей. Радиатор охлаждения усилителей мощности скрыт внутри корпуса, однако очевидно, что для отвода тепла используется и задняя коммутационная панель, которая заметно нагревается при работе. С учетом того, что сетевой трансформатор также смонтирован внутри АС, ее вес в 5,8 кг хотя и не выглядит рекордным, свидетельствует о добротности конструкции HS 50 M.

При включении колонки начинает светиться индикатор, спрятанный за логотипом на передней панели. Динамики АС требуют определенного прогрева для того, чтобы выйти на рабочий режим – нам достался уже поработавший экземпляр, но для новой колонки этот период может занять пару дней. В целом звучание Yamaha HS 50 M оказалось сбалансированным и детальным, хотя и с понятным ограничением в области низких частот. Колонка отлично звучит в ближнем поле, даже с расстояния в метр пара АС формировала очень выразительную стереокартину с четким позиционированием звуковых образов

Единственное, на что стоит обратить внимание, это высота размещения колонок – они должны быть установлены так, чтобы пищалка была на уровне уха слушателя, или чуть-чуть выше. Кроме того, звучание колонок в области НЧ заметно улучшается при их размещении на амортизирующих опорах, например, из мягкой резины

Ну и, разумеется, стоит поэкспериментировать с переключателями АЧХ, так как они весьма серьезно влияют на характер звучания колонки, а также позволяют в значительной степени скомпенсировать их не идеальное размещение в комнате.

Design & Features

The design of the HS8 and HS7 is roughly the same, though the HS8s are a bit heavier at 22.5 lbs. Both are Black and White, and both are Active monitors like we discussed before.

Both have a High Trim EQ Switch and a Room control switch. The HS8 has more total power at 120W, while the HS7 comes in at 95.

Both have balanced XLR and TRS inputs. The main difference is the bass.

The HS8’s bass definitely digs deeper, so if you’re in a smaller room it’s going to be overkill, especially with no room treatment. I would say if you have a large room, the HS8 is ideal as long as you plan on using some bass traps and acoustic panels.

You could get away with using the HS7 without treatment, but it’s not really recommended. These will do better in medium-sized rooms. If you were to use them in a small room, definitely get some bass traps and panels. If not, the sound (and especially the bass) will bounce around and contribute to an inconsistent and shoddy final mixdown.

Be aware the HS8s have a lot more bass and are preferred without an amp. They also require more room treatment because of their huge footprint and sound. These may not work very well in small bedroom studios, but Acoustic Sound Treatment goes a long way.

For clarity:

The HS8 has an 8″ woofer
The HS7 has a 6.5″ woofer

Both are rear ported, so placement is critical. We’ll get into that in a bit!

Thoughts from Stu’s notepad

A big decision on which monitor to buy depends largely on your studio space. Do you have a small room or a large room? If you have a small room, you may consider the HS5 or JBL LSR305. Check out the best affordable studio monitors for more on those 2! If you have a larger room, the HS8’s maybe for you. The HS7s also do well in smaller to medium-sized rooms.
Make sure to purchase balanced cables to avoid noise/ground floor issues.
If you don’t want a sub-woofer, the HS8s are the go-to option as long as you have a larger room. Keep in mind that a sub-woofer really isn’t necessary with either of these. If you were to use the HS7s like a fun monitor, you could opt for the sub. But then, why not just go with the HS8.
Never buy monitors with drivers larger than 5″ before your room is treated. This is a general rule of thumb from my experience.

Yamaha HS7 vs HS8: Conclusion

Yamaha does not disappoint, and their speakers are the industry standard.

The HS7 and HS8 have a lot of similarities but also important differences.

It would be tricky to pinpoint a clear winner, but the HS8 does provide more power for the price.

Use Yamaha HS7 If…

You’re looking for affordable, yet high-quality speakers
You plan to set it up in a smaller room
You don’t need it for bass-heavy music
You need it for home studio set
it’s not important where you place the speaker in the room
You want a unit that isn’t enormous

Use Yamaha HS8 If…

You’re looking for a speaker with more power and output
You need it for bass-heavy music and other types of music
You plan to set it up in a bigger room (but not close to walls and corners)
You’re looking for a unit with the best quality and bigger power for the price

Set Up & Placement

As alluded to in the open, hooking these up shouldn’t be complicated.

Let’s go over what you’ll need first:

A PC/Laptop.
2 studio monitors of your choice.
An audio interface. This is the middle man between the sound you hear and the monitors. It effectively powers the monitors via a clean digital to analog conversion and amplifier. So basically, something like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is what we would call an interface with built-in preamps and a clean A/D conversion. You could also opt for a standalone preamp, but it’s not necessary. Related: Preamp vs. Interface I would just go with an interface to start!
Balanced XLR to TRS cables. We discussed earlier why balanced cables are preferred. We want to cancel out any noise and using balanced cables effectively does that by using reverse polarity to achieve the desired effect.

User reviews of Yamaha HS7 Vs HS8 are generally positive. Customers report they love the accuracy and clarity these speakers provide. Yet, while they are accurate and clear in the high and middle, the speakers LACK the low end.

Based on the customer experience, you’ll need to invest in a subwoofer. That is if you plan to make bass-involved music.

In a nutshell, the HS7 is for a vast majority of customers looking for the best option for this price range.

For Both

Pros

Both have a tight, flat, and clean sound. Very neutral.
The HS8 has more bass, but it’s still a pretty accurate monitor. There’s less bass on the HS7 and it’s more accurate I would say.
Both are very revealing. If your mix sounds good on these, it will translate extremely well to other sources.
Both require minimal changes required after the initial mix-down. Very accurate and true. Again, keep in mind that you’ll have to kind of undercompensate for the bass more on the HS8 than you would with the HS7.
Both have extremely solid construction. Built like the Rock. The Rock says. Keep in mind the HS8 is heavier at 22.5 lbs. vs. 18.1 for the HS7.

Cons

The HS8 is not as good in smaller rooms. Big rooms are advised. These aren’t quite as accurate as an HS7.

Let’s take a look at the design of each!

Introduction

Back when I was first starting my home studio, I didn’t even know what studio monitors were. Once I found out, it seemed like a daunting task to even figure out how to hook them up. Related: What are studio monitors?

In reality, it’s a fairly simple process. Pretty much all active monitors on the market today come with a balanced XLR and/or TRS input.

“Active” simply means there’s no need for separate amplification. The amp is inside. All you need is something like an audio interface to connect with your PC/Laptop. Related: Passive vs. Active Speakers: Which Are Best For YOU?

You’d simply purchase 2 sets of balanced XLR to TRS cables.

In my studio, I have the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 which connects to my JBL LSR 305s via these cables or these. Just match the XLR end with whatever your speaker has (male or female).

Both of the balanced TRS cables go into the back of my 2i2, while the XLR ends plug into each of the monitors.

There are other ways to hook them up.

You could use RCA to XLR, or RCA to TRS. The former is unbalanced while the latter is balanced. I always recommend using balanced cables because they use 2 signal wires plus a ground wire, in effect reversing the polarity and canceling out any noise.

Build & Size

The Yamaha HS8 studio monitor is a pretty beefy son of a gun, to put it mildly. You may remember my Yamaha HS5 vs. KRK Rokit 5 article. The 8 is simply a bass heavier monitor, that also happens to be a lot bigger and heavier (physically) overall.

Both the HS8 and HS7 monitors have a rock-solid build though. The only thing to keep in mind is your studio space. If you have a smaller space to work with, the HS7 is probably your best bet.

The HS8 is a huge monitor, sitting 15.4″ tall and 9.8″ wide.
The HS7 is a bit shorter at 13.1″ and 8.3″ wide.

Take a quick measurement of your space and see which will fit better! The last thing you’d want to do is buy the HS8 and find out there’s no room for it.

How about the sound?

Brands You Can Trust

I’m not normally a brand loyalist. Both established and new brands can deliver excellent products. Likewise, they can also deliver poor products. But established brands do offer consistency. Plus they have an established history in the industry.

Knowing a brand has a track record of delivering quality products gives greater peace of mind when purchasing. It also gives extra confidence in after-sales support in the unlikely event that something isn’t right.

This is why I’m a fan of the Yamaha HS range of studio monitors. Yamaha ticks all the boxes on this front. Excellent support and a long history of excellence.

If you are new to buying studio monitors I suggest you stick to established brands. There are plenty to choose from so you shouldn’t have any difficulty finding the monitor that suits your needs from a brand you can trust.

Критики могут обратить внимание на недостаточно точную детализацию эффектов, но сравнивать одну колонку с комплектом домашнего кинотеатра минимум некорректно. Можно с уверенностью сказать, что достоинства этой аудиосистемы перекрывают все вынужденные компромиссы, и пожалеть о выборе в ее пользу точно не придется

Steps

Plug the TRS ends into the back of your Interface, while also plugging the XLR ends into the backs of both of your monitors. Everything should be off at this point.
Plug your Interface into your PC via USB. The device should be recognized. If it’s not, don’t panic! Just go to the companies website and find the appropriate driver. 99% of the time that will fix the issue.
After it’s recognized, go into your Sound panel and set the device as default. This will ensure that the sound comes from out of the monitors and not something else that you have (i.e. a separate headphone amp or something).
Play some music!
