Some DAC/Amps claim to give you the front row experience in exchange for less soundstage. Others promise a 3D soundstage in trade for fewer details. The Conductor 3 Performance simply gives you everything in the recording, without sugar-coating, the good and sometimes the ugly. You can locate a tapping foot on the stage while enjoying that lingering vibration of air after a keystroke.

Advanced Digital

The Conductor uses the SABRE32/ESS9038Q2M DAC and XMOS USB receiver chips, the most advanced and expensive in the industry. Its Customised USB driver by Thesycon Germany ensures low latency bit-perfect audio playback. The result is incredible processing power, accurately playing back DSD512 and 38bit/786khz audio.

It also features a Qualcomm/CSR8675 Bluetooth 5.0 receiver. Playing back at 24bit/96khz with aptX HD audio codec. , it pushes sound quality and ease of use to the highest level.

The Power Supply

The Conductor Performance features the same Max Current Power Supply (MCPS) that has made the Conductor Reference legendary.

A technology developed, owned and used exclusively by Burson Audio, the MCPS raises voltage frequency from 50Hz to 170kHz, pushing noise beyond human hearing. It completely overcomings the disadvantages of both linear power supplies and conventional switching power supplies, resulting in incredible dynamic and micro-details.

The Cool Case

We like to turn Class-A amplifiers from monsters with heat-fins into elegant, desktop-friendly machines, and we do it through the Cool Case. Made from high-density aluminium and electroplated to space-grey, the Cool Case is a unified heat-sink keeping the Class-A Conductor cool and optimised. Critics such as Headfonics called it “the new standard” in the audio industry.

Having a footprint that is 30% less than the Conductor Reference and a volume similar to a lunch box, it is beautiful but unobstructive. Take it to work, and no one will raise an eyebrow.

Opamp Rolling Fun

The Conductor Performance comes with Burson V6 Vivid discrete opamps. But don't let us or anyone dictate your listening experience. The Conductor encourages opamp rolling with gold plated DIP8 sockets along its signal path. With hundreds of audio opamps out there, you have the freedom to tailor your listening experience to your preference.

The Sound

While our Conductor Reference is like Huge Jackman in Kate and Leopold, the completed package, the Conductor Performance is the shredded Wolverine. It's still him but stripped down! Power and total control of that power will be the overwhelming first impression. It energises every note and space in between, bringing accuracy and micro-details. The C3 performance is for the perfectionist who works hard and plays harder.

Comparisons

My most recent review was of the portable powerhouse iFi iDSD Diablo DAC/amp. The Diablo is a far smaller unit than the Conductor 3R, but features a similar maximum output power of 5W @32Ohms, albeit in balanced mode (half that in single-ended).

As far as features go, the Diablo bests the 3R in only a few categories: balanced input and output, three levels of gain (vs High/Low), better included accessories, and (of course) portability. The 3R has multiple analog inputs, SE output, Bluetooth, various filter and playback options, a screen, and remote control. It boasts far more user features, but it's also about twice as expensive as the Diablo.

Comparing the iFi iDSD Diablo and the Conductor 3R.

At first glance, the Diablo didn't make sense to me. I wondered why anyone would require that sort of power in a portable device. It lacks features found in lesser iFi models, with a stripped-out race car approach to the highest fidelity audio reproduction.

However, it's the quality of reproduction that firmly won me over.

In fact, other than the Eco (low) gain setting not being quite low enough for sensitive IEMs to provide a usable volume range, the Diablo has none of the drawbacks I experienced with the 3R.

First off, the one and only Diablo review unit functioned perfectly, right out of the box. It also has no audible noise floor hiss, far less audible clicking when powering on, and no other unwanted noise oddities (like the screen brightness hum with the 3R). It's also easier to fit on a busy desk.

That would all hold less weight if the Conductor was far and away the better-sounding choice. It just isn't. The Diablo does sound great, with a very similar impression of effortless power and the dynamics found in the 3R. It's equally as spacious and natural sounding. They don't sound exactly the same, but it's much more a fine-grained case of subjective preference than one of superiority.

An undocumented but cool feature of the Roon playback software is that if you have 2 DACs plugged into a single source (in my case an old Macbook Air and 4-port USB hub), you can switch back and forth between the DACs without interrupting playback.

This allows for easy song synchronization and volume normalization between both units. Thus, you can quickly swap a pair of headphones between the playback devices by unplugging and plugging into the other. It's a very painless way to compare two DAC/amps.

And that's what I did between the Diablo and the Conductor 3R. At length.

If the Conductor is approaching the pinnacle of audio reproduction, well then, the Diablo is right there beside it, headed in the same direction at half the cost. If anything, the experience of simultaneously using the Diablo and the 3R had the unexpected result of making me appreciate the Diablo all the more. And so it seems, we must give the Devil its due.

Burson Conductor 3 Performance

As a soundstage nutjob, I love this Conductor 3 Performance. It reminds me of a greatly improved HA160, my favorite DAC of all time. So naturally, this is subjectively excellent for me.

Совместимость

В целом ЦАП очень хорош в плане совместимости с наушниками, маленький выходной импеданс усилителя в паре с аккуратной цифровой регулировкой громкости и низким шумом позволяют без проблем использовать его c IEM. На обратной стороне прямой — тугие изодинамы, с которыми тоже проблем не возникает (1,68 мВт — это не шутки).

Стилистически ADA1 тоже весьма универсален, тут главное — чтобы нравилась подобная подача. Конечно, любителям «аудиофильских» записей стоит подобрать более детальное устройство, так же как и ценителям ударных НЧ, я же с удовольствием слушал с этим ЦАПом практически любые записи. Отдельно хочу отметить, как хорошо ЦАПу удаются старые записи в классическом мастеринге: прогрессив и арт-рок, джаз и все, что было записано до расцвета цифровых носителей. К качеству записи этот комбайн умеренно критичен, баллов на 7 из 10, то есть, конечно, плохой уровень сведения вы услышите, но не настолько, чтобы это было невозможно слушать.

iamthemorning — Too Many Years. Часто в погоне за кумирами мы перестаём замечать то, что находится близко. Так вот мимо моего внимания прошла питерская группа со сложным названием iamthemorning, получившая в этом году премию за лучший альбом от престижнейших Prog Magazine. Удивительное сочетание хрупкости и мелодизма, помноженное на приятные композиторские находки, даёт в сочетании альбом, к которому хочется постоянно возвращаться. Разумеется, подобная пластинка не может не радовать качеством записи, поэтому она ещё и превращается в праздник для слуха, особенно если в качестве сервировки выступают Yulong ADA1 и Kennerton Odin. И да, не могу не привести ссылку на Bandcamp проекта, это те музыканты, которых не стыдно поддержать.

Storm Corrosion — Ljudet Innan. И снова проект, который ускользнул в своё время от моего внимания. Что если взять Микаэля Окерфельдта из Opeth и добавить к нему Стивена «наше все» Вильсона? Получится проект Storm Corrosion, записавший альбом в 2012 году. Оба музыканта отошли от привычной стилистики и выпустили медитативный, спокойный альбом, наполненный чувством светлой меланхолии

Неважно, какое у вас настроение, после нескольких треков Storm Corrosion вы обязательно достигните равновесия с собой и окружающим миром. Конечно же, хороший источник типа героя сегодняшнего обзора — просто необходим для этого

From the Law Offices of… — Ready, Set, Sue. Ну и завершит сегодняшнюю подборку ещё один суперпроект с суперучастниками. Левин, Рудесс и Миннеманн, записывающие совместный альбом, это как Зевс, Аполлон и Арес, сошедшие с Олимпа для участия в битве на стороне своих почитателей. Я сейчас даже не буду рассказывать про нечеловеческий уровень этих музыкантов, тут все традиционно: Левин со стиком Чэпмена, Рудесс с любимым iPad и Миннеманн… просто с ударной установкой, не напрягаясь берут вершины, недоступные другим. На этом проекте они тоже решили отойти от привычных жанров и уйти в сторону космического звучания, характерного для начала 80-х. Получилось у них блистательно. Каждый трек с этого альбома можно прослушать раз 50, и в 51 все равно найти в нем что-то новое, особенно если вам поможет хороший ЦАП. Не думаю, что тут нужны дополнительные намёки.

Features

The Conductor 3 Performance has some modern decoding capability up to DSD512 native and PCM 32BIT/768kHz level though still no MQA unfolding or rendering.

I still giggle each time I see DSD512 offered so commonly these days. I recall back a few years ago, like 5 or 6 years ago, with my Red Wine AK120 DAP from Astell and Kern that was modded. It supposed DSD64 and I was like “oh man, this is awesome, so fancy!”.

Now, half a decade later, DSD 512 and 256 are common and the new standard. Ya'll costing me so much in DSD inventory! Damn you!

The Burson Conductor 3 Performance also has a Bluetooth 5.0 antenna on the backside, I use it often. I absolutely love streaming from Spotify Premium via my iPhone SE 2020. I'm moving away from DAPs on my personal rig and preferring the streaming experience these days. So, having this as an option is lovely.

The fully aluminum chassis and 3 sets of MCPS Power Supplies help cool the unit cool, it seems. And if you want to roll some OP-amps, go for it, the Burson Conductor 3 Performance supports that too. If you want a pure sound in tone or a warmer vivid one. You have options such as the stock V6 Vivid or the V6 Classics.

Burson Conductor 3 Reference Sound

Due to the elevated noise floor, the 3R is better suited to more difficult to drive, full-sized cans, which is a shame, as the 3R sounds very, very good. It's a case of ‘so-very-close-to-perfect.' If you have the proper headphones (such as the Audeze LCD2) to pair or can overlook the unwanted noise problems, the resulting sound is very good indeed.

Overall fidelity is excellent. The abundant power seems limitless but well within control. Dynamics are as vast and full-throttled as any I've heard. The sound is spacious and large, far from the closed-in or boxy presentation found in some lower-end gear.

The Conductor 3R's reproduction seems very true to the source, whether through its internal DAC or the analog inputs (the Bluetooth also works very well but is a touch less clear and detailed). This isn't to say the 3R's sound is entirely uncolored and flat, as the overall impression is one of ‘oomph' with a touch of warmth, but not so much that any sort of detail or resolution is noticeably lost.

The Conductor 3R is large, but it needs all that space to contain the huge array of components.

While ESS Sabre chipset based DACs lean towards a brighter, more clinical, and sterile type of sound, the implementation within the 3R tames this tendency. The overall impression is of very natural audio reproduction.

Feeding the DAC to external amplifiers such as the Bottlehead Crack or Hagerman Tuba yields a fantastic listening experience, with the DAC performing as I expect, taking a back seat to the unique sound characteristics of the amplifiers and paired headphones. The DAC seems transparent and detailed and is a very fine-sounding source regardless of the amplifier used.

Теперь в компании решили отойти от этой традиции и попробовать новый дизайн. Внешний вид ADA1 получился, безусловно, стильным, но вот с удобством уже есть вопросы. Корпус теперь сделан в виде цельного и практически монолитного параллелепипеда из достаточно толстого алюминия, что, безусловно, добавляет устройству массивности и солидности. Передняя панель сделана из стекла, тут расположен экран, три сенсорные кнопки управления и выход на наушники. Смотрится панель стильно, но немилосердно собирает пыль и отпечатки пальцев, поэтому вам придётся или часто её протирать, или смириться с неидеальным видом. Как и в случае с iPhone 7 Jet Black — это расплата за красоту. Сенсорные кнопки — второе немного странное решение, я уже как-то привык к удобнейшим крутилкам, которыми компания оснащала свои устройства в прошлом, что может быть удобней и интуитивней этого элемента управления? Теперь у нас осталось всего три кнопки, нажать которые не глядя очень сложно. Конечно, назвать это большой проблемой нельзя, но налицо некоторое ухудшение эргономики.

Экран в этом ЦАПе — одноцветный LED, причём Yulong выбрали для него красный цвет и сделали его достаточно неярким, видимо, чтобы не утомлять пользователя лишней яркостью. В реальности экран вполне читаем, хотя на фотографиях с выставленным светом почти ничего не видно. Экран двухстрочный, на него выводится выбранный источник сигнала, разрешение, цифровой фильтр и громкость. Тем же красным цветом подсвечиваются и кнопки. Через 20 секунд простоя ADA1 вообще отключает подсветку, чтобы не мешать пользователю.

Поскольку Wi-Fi — относительно свежая в ЦАПах возможность, вкратце расскажу, как этим пользоваться. Для начала надо включить Wi-Fi и нажимая Input выбрать его, ЦАП переключится в режим точки доступа, и вы сможете подключиться к его Wi-Fi-сети. После этого можно запустить утилиту для смартфона (для iPhone она есть в AppStore по запросу «Yulong», для Android вроде бы можно скачать с сайта компании, но я её там не нашёл) и перейти к настройкам. В утилите можно обновить прошивку, если компания выпустит обновления и сконфигурировать ADA1 для подключения к существующим Wi-Fi-сетям. После включения ADA1 в вашу сеть вы сможете подключиться к нему через DLNA или AirPlay и стримить туда музыку.

Задняя панель плеера заполнена разнообразными интерфейсами, на которые в компании не поскупились. К сожалению, в ADA1 нет линейного входа, поэтому использовать его в режиме усилителя не получится, но остальной «джентльменский набор» присутствует. Есть коаксиальный и оптический S/PDIF, USB-вход, а также AES/EBU. Из выходов есть обычная пара RCA и пара балансных XLR, по традиции к ним можно подключить наушники с балансным кабелем и слушать их, этот выход «обслуживает» буфер на OPA1632. Главное при этом — использовать кабель с правильной распиновкой (описана в инструкции). Также на задней панели размещается гнездо Wi-Fi-антенны, переключатель напряжения питания, разъём подключения сетевого шнура и выключатель.

Все остальные поверхности устройства абсолютно пусты, если не считать хороших по качеству резиновых ножек на нижней стороне.

Звук

Для прослушивания устройства использовалось следующее оборудование:

В Yulong немного отошли от своих традиций и сделали для ADA1 очень приятное звучание с легким эффектом сглаживания микронюансов, это обеспечивает снижение утомляемости и располагает к длительным сессиям с любимыми наушниками. Расплатой за это является некоторое снижение микродетальности, впрочем, не всегда это нужно. ADA1 выступает в некоторой роли «антиподом» типично аудиофильскому звуку с его традиционной бритвенной резкостью и акцентом на насыщенность.

Бас у ADA1 хорош по скоростным характеристикам, комбайн отлично разделяет низкочастотные инструменты и передаёт текстурность НЧ на очень достойном уровне. Хорошо сбалансирован бас и количественно, хотя в некоторых случаях НЧ в исполнении этого устройства не хватает весомости, они чуть смягчены, поэтому любители мощных ударов могут быть расстроены. На мой же вкус, баса тут достаточно для большинства жанров за исключение совсем уж НЧ-ориентированных, и слегка легковесная подача неплохо компенсируется чуть притемнёнными наушниками. Из-за этой особенности подачи НЧ ADA1 часто характеризуют как светлый, хотя тут правильнее, пожалуй, говорить о «недотемнённости».

Верхние частоты тоже вписываются в общую концепцию «комфортного» звука: они не резкие, даже с достаточно светлыми наушниками получаются приемлемые (по крайней мере на мой слух) сочетания. Из-за этого пропадает присущий некоторым устройствам эффект псевдообъёмности и контрастности звучания, поэтому ADA1 — не устройство для тех, кто хочет сухого препарирования музыки на составляющие слои. При этом уровень детализации, необходимый для устройства подобного класса, сохраняется, ВЧ качественно проработаны и подаются без попытки их замаскировать. Если попридираться, можно отметить лёгкую вальяжность отработки переходов на ВСЧ/НВЧ, но чтобы это услышать — надо слушать очень долго и очень избранные треки.

Trouble in Paradise

Before we go further, and just so we're all on the same page, I should define the issues that I encountered with the two Conductor 3R units.

Unit 1 – internal revision 2.2

MacBook and Roon software recognize the Burson DAC as connected.
Selecting the headphone output on the 3R, there is no sound output from either 6.25mm headphone socket.
Tested the internal DAC and also from the RCA1 input with an external DAC.
With Bluetooth, the source shows the DAC as connected, but no sound comes from the 3R.
Confirmed that the 3R is not muted and turned up the volume. Only silence from the headphone jack.
Selecting the DAC output to RCA, there is sound only from the right channel.
With assistance from Burson, replaced internal discrete opamps with spare IC opamps. No change.

Version 2.2 (left) and version 2.5 (right) are easily distinguishable by the revised positioning of the Bluetooth board and antenna.

Unit 2 – internal revision 2.5

When pressing the power button, the unit usually doesn't power on, and the power LED flickers dimly for a couple of seconds. Typically, after 2-3 attempts, it will power on, and the screen will light up. This occurs regardless of how long or firmly the power button is pressed (either momentarily or for a full 1-2 seconds). It powers off normally using the button.
The RCA inputs 1 and 2 are labeled XLR on screen. On the first unit, the screen displayed RCA as expected.
With Burson's assistance, I disassembled and removed the front panel, cleaned and applied Deoxit to the connector pins, and reassembled. No change.
Upon Burson's suggestion, I tried swapping the front panel from the first unit in place of the second. Upon plug-in, the second unit immediately powered on but was entirely unresponsive. Replacing the original panel returned it into the ‘flickering power LED and intermittent power on' status.

Cleaning the pins and swapping front panels did not help the situation.

Despite the second unit's power issues and improperly labeled on-screen inputs, it appears to function as expected once I get it to turn on. Charles and Bhav at Burson were fantastic to deal with and very apologetic throughout the experience.

So now you understand my disappointment and concerns with the Conductor 3R. Two different board revisions and a variety of issues ranging from unusable to annoying. Am I just super unlucky, or is there more going on?

Not much to gloss onward about. The Burson Conductor 3 Performance presentation box is standard cardboard, but thick and offering a foam insert for protection. Beyond that, no accessories beyond the power cable and a remote. The exterior chassis is stunning, to say the very least. Solid metal and quite heavy for being on the smaller side.

The power button and mode shift button are a bit loose feeling though when I jiggle them, as is the main volume and selector knob. Nothing too serious.

I spoke to Burson about the looseness factor of the volume knob and was told that it was an intentional design element for the Burson Conductor 3 Performance. Due to its “3way axel” design, it allows the knob to rotate freely left and right, as well as be pushed inward to function as a confirmation selector in the UI.

The Burson Conductor 3 Performance primary LED light is blue in color and it is very bright. I have placed a piece of felt over it to block the spotlight that is cast in my bedroom each night.

I had this same problem on the original Conductor 3, it is just a bit too powerful of a light for usage in a dark listening area. Lights up my entire corner at night. Beyond that, the front LED panel is crisp and easily navigated. I like the simplicity factor.

Our Verdict

As a soundstage nutbar, I love this Conductor 3 Performance. It reminds me of a greatly improved HA160…my favorite DAC of all time. So naturally, I am subjectively this is excellent for me.

Also, the option to source my mid-tier speakers at long last is a great new thing for me. Burson thought this one out and kept it right in the middle of the road, able to play with pretty much whatever amplifier you want if you want to use a much more expensive high-end rig.

Hearing others are also enjoying this one as a speaker source (it has no speaker taps, so you need a speaker with normal analog input) has been stellar and so fun to share with others. I highly recommend the Conductor 3 Performance to anyone looking for a great high-end USB DAC and headphone amplifier combo.

LED Control Menu

Thankfully, the Burson Conductor 3 Performance UI is immensely easy to get around with. To start, you will need to tap the far-right button to activate mode selection and then use the volume knob to shift around inside the menus.

Pressing the knob in with a click will set the option highlighted currently. There are not many options, and I am glad it is not a mess of a complex system, everything is neat and tidy.

I prefer it very easily cycled through and intelligently laid out in a physical manner. I have received just that. You get some DSD functions and basic input and output/gain selection and not much else. I like this. Simple is better.
