Модели Silver RX2 присутствуют на российском рынке уже несколько лет и за это время зарекомендовали себя очень хорошо, став одним из лидеров в классе полочных акустических систем стоимостью около 1 тысячи долларов. В этом же групповом тесте они оказались самыми доступными, уступая конкурентам в цене от трети суммы и выше. Поэтому нам было интересно, как RX2 будут смотреться на фоне более дорогих акустических систем.
Что ж, британские мониторы обладают крепким басом, который становится серьезным фундаментом для музыки любых жанров. Можно сказать, что 200-миллиметровый мид-басовик не подкачал — демонстрация баса не ограничивается только верхним поддиапазоном, звук основательно забирается в мид-басовую область. В общей картине низкочастотные образы получаются несколько укрупненными, но с вполне осязаемыми очертаниями.
Далее идет ровная, четкая середина частотного спектра, как правило, слегка отодвинутая от слушателя, поэтому колонкам не хватает интимности при воспроизведении вокальных партий. Затем в дело вступает ясный, немного шероховатый верх. Мониторы RX2 любят играть громко, в этом случае у них лучше получается разворачивать музыкальную сцену, они лучше артикулируют важные места композиции.
Слушая с RX2 современные жанры — будь то рок, поп или танцевальная музыка, — понимаешь, что Monitor Audio создали неординарные акустические системы с хорошей динамикой и разборчивостью звучания, здесь они весьма конкурентоспособны на фоне более дорогих колонок.

Отличная динамика RS8 охватывает как верхнюю, так и крайнюю нижнюю часть шкалы громкости, проявляя неординарную чуткость к мелким деталям. Рекомендуем присмотреться (и прислушаться) к этой модели.
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
The woofers and midrange debut the mkII versions of Monitor Audio's Rigid Surface Technology (RST) drivers. These feature C-CAM using a new aluminium alloy to improve tensile strength, and a hexagonal dimpled profile derived from the RDT (Rigid Driver Technology) units in the company's Gold 5G stable . The RST II units also sport updates to the driver surrounds, plus a switch from ferrite to neodymium on the midrange magnet and a wider diameter voice-coil for the woofers.
Interestingly, while the C-CAM bass drivers are again 200mm (including the surrounds), Monitor Audio has downsized the Silver 500 7G's mid from ‘4in' to ‘3in' (actually a 76mm cone with 100mm chassis) in pursuit of improved directivity and better extension/integration with the loudspeaker's gold dome C-CAM tweeter. This high-frequency unit is also a new concoction, benefiting from a ring magnet, rear-vented surround, and patterned grille optimised to work with its second-generation Uniform Dispersion Waveguide.
All of the Silver 500 7G's driver assemblies are mounted to the cabinet via a bolt-through connection, which provides further rigidity to the internally braced, twin rear-ported MDF enclosures.
Driver Tech
Those
gold dome tweeters that first caught my eye in the 1990s are still a signature
of the Monitor Audio brand (even if the company now employs AMT tweeters in its
pricer Gold and Platinum lines), and the Silver 7G tweeter is reportedly the
best dome that the company has ever built. It's made from a revised and updated
C-CAM (ceramic-coated aluminum magnesium) material, developed in-house. The new
Uniform
Dispersion Waveguide II is
also proprietary. It provides a small amount of horn-loading, adding a few dB of
sensitivity and allowing the tweeter to play low enough to accommodate a lower
crossover point. Behind the dome, a totally new magnet structure and rear
chamber design represent a significant amount of R&D. Monitor Audio's technical director, Michael Hedges, has noted that the new tweeter has a
vented center magnet and venting on the surround as well, which is unusual. Monitor
Audio claims this new tweeter can reproduce “the most lifelike, convincing
treble” with “thrillingly clean, accurate response.”
Silver
7G speakers also sport new midrange and mid/bass drivers featuring Monitor
Audio's exclusive Rigid Surface Technology II (RST II) driver design. The cone
and geometry structure are all new, with a more rigid profile than ever before.
The new, spiffy-looking RST II hexagonal dimpled structure contributes to a
smooth, low-distortion sound, according to the company. The cones themselves
are made of a new aluminum alloy that reportedly “improves the tensile strength
of the cone while retaining all the benefits — low distortion, high
power-handling, excellent directivity — of (Monitor Audio's) C-CAM technology.
Drivers can go louder for longer without compromise.” Monitor Audio says that
the crossovers are all new as
well, but doesn't go into detail about their design. Michael Hedges did say that the improved performance
of the drivers has allowed the use of a simpler crossover.
All
the driver units are ground-up new designs. But within that, there are some
things where we built on previous drivers. So the 8-inch bass driver looks
quite similar to the old 6G 8-inch bass driver, but it's actually a completely
new cone profile and shape, and there's a new RST (Rigid Surface Technology)
pattern on the cone, and that signifies the use of a new aluminum alloy as
well. The surround/cone interaction has been improved. We removed about a third
to two-thirds of the energy of the breakup ring by optimizing the surround into
the cone and the junction there. Even more significant are the changes we've
made to the midrange driver. We've moved from a ferromagnet to a neodymium
magnet, and we've shrunk the size of the cone. Mind you, we don't look at
individual driver units and say, “Right, how do we make that driver unit
better?” We look at the whole loudspeaker and say, “How do we make the whole
loudspeaker better?»

Что несколько огорчает, но не критично– отсутствие колпачков на концах тепловых трубкок. Подобные колпачки использовались в кулере Thermalright Silver Arrow IB-E, но видимо сработал эффект экономии.
Неизменным является и технология фиксации тепловых трубок с подошвой основания – для лучшей теплоотдачи используется пайка. Само основание зеркальное, но по-прежнему есть нарекания к качеству обработки (с одной стороны оно выпуклое, с другой — есть небольшая вогнутость).
Отпечаток соответствующий. Только центральная часть основания получила хороший контакт, а дальше заметны не вытесненные области термопасты внутри.
ON TREND
Inside there's also a new crossover, which the brand says was designed concurrently with the Silver 500 7G's drivers, one project informing the other. Ceramic resistors, polypropylene and polyester capacitors, and air-core and steel-core inductors are used across an optimised three-way (800Hz/2.7kHz) network.
These floorstanders are rather imposing. If you want a loudspeaker that will fit neatly in a small/mid-sized room, investigate the Silver 200 or 300 models, as these use 156mm woofers and so don't have this cabinet's 23cm girth. The Silver 500 7G enclosure is deep too (33cm), and once Monitor Audio's new – and smart – moulded ABS outriggers are attached you'll have lost a lot of floorspace.
It's useful, then, that the new styling of this seventh generation is right on trend. Monitor Audio describes it as ‘crisp-edged', but that sells it short. There are no curved faces, but corners are smooth and the finish of our ‘High Gloss Black' and ‘Satin White' samples was spectacular. There are three other colourways to choose from: Black Oak, Natural Walnut and Ash variants that dress the cabinet in real wood veneers. The last of those is intended to evoke the ‘Scandinavian look', so ABBA fans should hunt it down.
LAB REPORT
MONITOR AUDIO SILVER 500 7G
Measured at the average listening height (just below the C-CAM tweeter) the ‘7G' Silver 500's response is remarkably flat and even with an exceptionally low ±1.0dB error from 200Hz-15kHz, the –9dB/24kHz treble dip increasing this to ±3.8dB across the wider 200Hz-20kHz span. The HF response limit of 22.6kHz (–6dB/10kHz) is set by this ‘dip' although this is only the prelude to the +10.6dB resonance of the hard dome at 30.9kHz . Pair matching is also exceptional at 0.4dB (200Hz-10kHz) and 0.6dB (200Hz-20kHz) while the grille adds a circa –2.5dB disruption between 4-9kHz . The two 200mm (160mm effective diameter) bass drivers operate over a 55-425Hz/–6dB bandwidth and the rear-facing ports, both tuned to 35Hz, maintain the low freq. reach to a diffraction-corrected 34Hz (–6dB re. 200Hz). Incidentally the lower woofer and port both have a ‘cleaner' output.
As importantly, while MA has engineered a response that's both flat and uniform, it's also achieved its high rated 90.5dB sensitivity at 90.2dB/1kHz (and 90.3dB re. 500Hz-8kHz) combined with low 0.1-0.2% midband distortion (re. 90dB SPL) without imposing an especially punishing load on the partnering amplifier. Strictly speaking the Silver 500 presents a 5ohm nominal load (it's rated at a harsher 4.1ohm) with an impedance minimum of 4.2ohm/164Hz and a further dip to 4.25ohm/2.35kHz, both instances with negligible impedance phase. Similarly, the maximum, modest swings in phase angle of +31o/–45o both occur at >8ohm impedance. PM

Speaking of Atmos, Monitor
Audio makes a variety of in-ceiling speakers to handle height effects, and if
you can install speakers in your ceiling, that's probably your best bet. But if
you can't (or just don't want to) go that route, you can turn to the Silver AMS 7G
Atmos-enabled speakers ($1,200/pair). The Silver AMS 7G is a 2-way design featuring a
5.25-inch mid/bass driver and that lovely gold dome tweeter on the top panel of a wedge-shaped
cabinet. It can be used as a “bouncy-house” up-firing speaker, if you're into
that; when placed atop the Silver 300 7G floor-standers, the Silver AMS 7G aims its sound at the ceiling, which
then reflects the height-channel audio toward the listening position. (The new
7G grill design allows the combined speakers to look almost like a single unit.
From an aesthetic perspective, it's one of the best executions of the
bouncy-house concept that I've seen.) If you want better performance, however,
the AMS 7G can be used as a separate height-channel speaker mounted high up on your
wall using the built-in keyhole wall-mounts. If you can swing it, I'd expect
this type of setup to be worth the additional installation hassle over the
bouncy-house approach.
Monitor
Audio's Silver Series has come a long way since I bought my second-gen Silvers
in 2004. Sadly, I sold those speakers, and the Cambridge Audio amp I used to
drive them, to my friend Chris after I moved into a place with a much smaller
room that simply couldn't accommodate them. The Silver 7G has my wallet
tingling in a way that makes my bank account extremely uncomfortable. I can't
think of another speaker series in this price range that looks as good (though
Wharfedale's Evo4 comes close.) I fully expect them to sound every bit as good
as they look, and I hope to find out soon.

Reborn in seventh-generation guise, and pilfering technology ideas from the brand's Gold Series, Monitor Audio's new Silver 7G loudspeaker range includes a Dolby Atmosenabled upfiring speaker. Designed to sit snugly atop the Silver 300 7G floorstander (pictured), or mounted on a wall, the Silver AMS features a new RST II midbass and C-CAM ‘gold' dome tweeter – drivers shared across an eight-model lineup that includes dedicated centre and surround FX units.

By now, there's surely not an audiophile alive who doesn't know that Monitor Audio's Platinum loudspeaker series is its pinnacle, and that as you move down through Gold, Silver and Bronze the prices become friendlier and the technology trickles. Silver – a range that's been rolling for over 20 years – represents the sweet spot in this hierarchy, and, says the UK company, is its most popular series. Judging from the performance, build quality and elegant design of the Silver 500 7G, I can't imagine this popularity waning.
The ‘7G' suffix is important, as it denotes this three-way floorstander is from Monitor Audio's fresh-from-the-factory seventh generation lineup that launched in August. The Silver 6G models are discontinued but the naming conventions have been retained, so the Silver 500 7G is a direct replacement for the Silver 500 6G.
It's the largest and costliest speaker in the series, joined by slimmer floorstanders (the Silver 300 and '200) and standmount/bookshelf models (the Silver 100 and '50). All feature upgrades to drivers, crossover, and cabinet/finish, so while this is another case of evolution not revolution, there's still more going on than meets the eye.
DRIVING HISTORY
Monitor Audio has pursued the ideal of very light, stiff drivers since the R852MD standmount with its alloy tweeter in 1985, followed by the ‘gold dome' in 1986 and the ceramic sandwich mid/bass driver that appeared in the Studio 10 in 1989. The first of what we would recognise as MA's C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/Magnesium) drivers appeared in the Studio 20 in 1991. Marking this 30th anniversary, the latest C-CAM and RST II (Rigid Surface Technology) drivers in Monitor Audio's Silver 7G series are the result of ‘trickledown' from the previous 5th-gen Gold series. The dimples that serve to enhance both the physical structure and moderate the resonant behaviour of the RST II bass and bass/mid cones are hexagonal, rather than circular, in shape here. The alloy itself has been changed to offer greater tolerance of the increased forces during moments of high excursion, maintaining performance at even higher levels without increasing the mass or thickness of the cone. The ‘C-CAM' component refers to both the alloy and oxide coating used across all its drivers, including the gold-coloured 25mm tweeter. For the latter, this brings exceptional stiffness that, almost inevitably, yields a vigorous breakup mode outside the audioband, here at 31kHz . PM

Модель RX2 — более крупный из двух полочников линейки Silver. Монитор действительно не кажется малышом, весит почти 10 кг, зато на широкой лицевой панели (230 мм) хватило места для СЧ/НЧ-динамика размером 200 мм — не каждый напольник может похвастаться таким «главным калибром».
В центре белоснежной в ямках мембраны установлена хромированная «пуля», улучшающая отвод тепла от мотора динамика. Твитер с 25-миллиметровым куполом Gold Dome защищен мелкоячеистой сеткой. В последней модификации инженеры Monitor Audio довели рабочую полосу пищалки до внушительной частоты в 35 кГц. Разделительные фильтры полочника настроены на частоту 2 кГц.

Технический комментарий
Амплитудно-частотная характеристика отличается выпуклостью в басовом диапазоне, достаточной равномерностью в среднечастотном диапазоне и повышенными флуктуациями в ВЧ-области. Довольно хорошая низкая граница (34 Гц) также намекает на глубокий бас. Правда, в этой области на графике КНИ заметны внутрикорпусные резонансы, что немного портит общее впечатление от нарисованной выше картины. Поведение АЧХ по звуковому давлению в высокочастотном диапазоне может привести к окрашиванию звучания. На графиках хорошо заметен внутренний резонанс диффузора твитера (19,2 кГц). График прямоугольного импульса просто промодулирован этой частотой. Мы склонны отнести это к материалу, из которого изготовлены все динамики колонок. Зато зависимость входного сопротивления от частоты порадовала. Максимальное значение импеданса составляет 15,01 Ом — третий результат в тесте. Среднеквадратичное отклонение также мало. Акустика послужит хорошей нагрузкой для большинства усилителей.
The Silver 7G Lineup
Monitor Audio Silver 300 7G
All
speakers in the lineup use a 1-inch C-CAM Gold Dome tweeter. The baby of the range is the Silver 50 7G ($1,100/pair), a 2-way ported
bookshelf speaker with a 5.25-inch mid/bass driver. It stands just over 11
inches tall. The larger Silver 100 7G ($1,400/pair) is nearly 15 inches tall,
and utilizes an 8-inch mid/bass driver, allowing it to reach down to 35 Hz (in-room,
-6dB). The Silver 200 7G ($2,100/pair) is the smallest floor-stander at just
under 34 inches in height. It's a 2.5-way design sporting a pair of 5.25-inch
mid/bass drivers and dual rear-firing ports. The Silver 300 7G ($2,600/pair) is
a 3-way design with a pair of 6-inch woofers and a single 3-inch midrange
driver. At just over 41 inches tall, it's the spiritual descendant of my
beloved, second-generation Silver S8 towers from the early aughts. The flagship
of the new lineup is the Silver 500 7G
($3,200/pair), which features a pair of 8-inch woofers and a 3-inch midrange
driver. It's over 43 inches tall, and a substantial 12.5 inches wide. Thanks to
its larger cabinet volume and bigger woofers, the 500 7G can dig down to 27 Hz
(in-room, -6dB), and it offers a high-ish sensitivity rating of 90.5 dB. The
Expert Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) has awarded the Silver 500 7G the
“Best Product 2021-2022” in the Floorstanding Loudspeakers category. In the
lab, EISA president Paul Miller found that the Silver 500 7G's response was “remarkably
flat” when measuring from the average listening height, and said that its
pair-matching was “exceptional.” All of the above speakers have a nominal
impedance of 8 ohms, though they all dip down to the 4-ohm range at certain
frequencies.
Silver C250 7G
If
you're only into 2-channel audio, that's everything you need to know. But for
the home theater crowd, the Silver 7G range has three more speakers that will
be of interest. The Silver C250 7G ($1,100 each) is a fairly chunky 3-way center-channel
speaker that places a pair of 5.25-inch woofers on either side of the
vertically-oriented assembly holding the tweeter and midrange driver. Unlike
the bookshelf and floor-standing models, the C250 7G has a sealed (rather than
ported) cabinet, which measures a little over 8 inches tall, a little over 18
inches wide, and almost 11 inches deep. The Silver FX 7G ($1,100/pair) is a wall-mountable
surround-channel speaker that can be used in either dipole or bipole mode. The
6-inch mid/bass driver fires directly out into the room, while the dual
tweeters are on angled baffles, firing off to either side. (If you're setting
up a full Dolby Atmos home theater, stick to bipole mode, or just use the
bookshelf models for your side and rear channels.)
